Signal mimics are used when the required visibility of main signals cannot be achieved.

Signal mimics are always on the side prescribed for the associated main signal. A signal mimic at the location of a protection signal does not show a light when the protection signal is not in clearance.

A fully functional ÖBB signal mimic. This shows the condition of the main signal in advance at confusing places, i.e. in the model above all in front of arches and in front of hills or buildings that restrict visibility, and is absolutely indispensable. Although the true-to-scale lamp box looks quite large like the prototype, the many LEDs are extremely close together, so that for production and correct light emission during operation, they must not all light up at the same time due to overexposure.
