Signal lights with LED
In the traffic regulations of the German-speaking countries Germany, Austria and Switzerland, traffic lights are referred to differently. In Germany, for example, according to Section 43 of the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO), they are referred to as traffic lights (LZA).
In the Austrian Road Traffic Regulations (Section 39) and in the Signalization Regulations (SSV) of the Swiss Road Traffic Act, the term traffic light system (LSA) is used.
The term traffic light system used in the German Road Traffic Regulations has a different legal meaning in Austria, since according to the Austrian Railway Act, it only refers to systems at railway crossings.
Traffic lights are used at intersections or junctions (junctions) for the following reasons:
The system can be used to optimize traffic flow. At high traffic densities, for example when there are several lanes in each direction, traffic lights allow the best control of traffic flow.
They can help to defuse dangers at complicated or confusing intersections. At intersections with more than four directions, the regulation with traffic signs can be unclear or confusing and lead to accidents.
A traffic light system simplifies such situations by providing clear instructions, possibly supplemented by additional warning lights, for example when oncoming traffic must be given priority.
They can be used at intersections with a corresponding volume of traffic where a roundabout cannot be set up due to space constraints.
Red is always at the top all over the world. This enables people with red-green color blindness or color blindness to orient themselves. At transverse traffic lights, the red light is on the left in countries with right-hand traffic, and on the right in countries with left-hand traffic, and therefore always in the middle of the lane. In Switzerland, the green light used to be square and the yellow light triangular at horizontal traffic lights.
The visual appearance usually consists of a black background with round or square light signals. Shielding screens, also known as barges, are installed to shield against sunlight and prevent phantom light. If necessary, additional black/white contrast screens are attached to the signal heads to make them easier to see.

If the signal is dark: Free travel in all directions, tram priority rules apply
