In January 2017, the Austrian Federal Railways concluded a framework agreement with Siemens for a total of 200 new Vectron type multi-system locomotives. The locomotives are scheduled to be used in more than ten countries in Eastern and Southeastern Europe as well as in Germany and Italy. The locomotives are handed over to the ÖBB in several delivery series under the series designation 1293.

Delivery of the third delivery series with 61 locomotives began in March 2020. Of these, 28 machines will also be equipped for use in the Netherlands and Belgium. The locomotives of the 1st and 2nd delivery series are equipped with the country package for Austria, Germany, Italy, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Croatia and Slovenia.
