At the beginning of the 1970s, Linz was still a steam locomotive Eldorado with locomotives of the 50, 52, 77 and 93 series. Apart from the machines that had been completely or partially repaired, the others were mostly in a rather dilapidated visual condition, that is to say: rusty and dirty.

A group of young boys - later co-founders of the Austrian Society for Railway History - set out to optically optimize individual steam locomotives.

The 77.66 was a special gourmet piece in terms of coloring. It received a “state railway paint job”. Black boiler, green water tanks and cab, red wheels, shiny wheel tires and boiler rings. Although this color scheme did not exist on old Austrian locomotives or on locomotives from the time of the First Republic, we boys liked it and word quickly spread among railway enthusiasts and photographers about the gems that were traveling on non-electrified lines in Upper Austria.

The 77.28, which was added later, had the comparable colored appearance of the 77.66. She kept it for a long time after it was already owned by the ÖGEG. However, after her last general inspection at the latest, she got her original ÖBB color dress back.

Although the two “colorful” 77s were never consistent with railway history, they are still a piece of Austrian railway history because they are still in operation in this color scheme.
