To replace the costly and labor-intensive steam locomotives in shunting service, the Austrian Federal Railways procured a series of 400 hp Class 2062 diesel locomotives starting in 1958. The Jenbacher Works in Tyrol built them until 1966. A total of 65 of these two-axle light diesel locomotives were built.
With their distinctive cast-iron front plates, which served as ballast weights, these locomotives were used throughout Austria for shunting and construction train service. On the branch lines of Lower Austria, these locomotives were commonly seen hauling passenger trains with one or two carriages. The last locomotives were retired from regular service in 2003. However, some examples, designated as X262 series locomotives, are still in use today as works and construction train locomotives.
