5042 014-0 was the only vehicle in the series to feature the ÖBB logo
Based on the development of the VT 41 series diesel railcars, the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) procured larger VT 42 series diesel railcars between 1935 and 1937. These vehicles had two 210 hp engines and were designed for a top speed of 110 km/h. After the war, the ÖBB operated the railcars under the new series designation 5042. Their area of operation was now the Western Railway, where they were used, among other things, for... as express trains. The progressive electrification of the main lines relegated the 5042 series locomotives to the branch lines of Lower Austria during their final years of service.
