As part of the Austro-Takt, three express trains were offered as fast daily connections from Vienna to Switzerland in the early 1980s. The "Zurichsee" ended in the city of Zurich that gave it its name. With the timetable change in May 1987, the European railways introduced the new “EuroCity” type of train. These were international train connections that had to meet certain quality criteria in terms of travel time and rolling stock. The express train "Zurichsee" became "Maria Theresia" in the course of the conversion to the Eurocity.
